Kandil Simidi is a traditional Turkish simit pastry, coated in sesame seeds. Only sold and enjoyed on Kandil days, the 5 holiest nights of the year. To announce these holy nights to the public, the minarets are lit up for all to see.

The Islamic Calendar is calculated from the Moon’s rotation, so the dates of the holidays change each year.

The Five Holy Nights are:
Mevlid Kandili – The Birth of the Prophet Mohammad
Regaip Kandili – The Night of the Prophet Mohammad’s Conception
Miraç Kandili – The Prophet Mohammad’s Rising into Heaven
Berat Kandili – The Day of Forgiveness (of Sins)
Kadir Gecesi – The Korans first appearance to The Prophet Mohammad
